Understanding Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are a common medical problem. Veins are the blood vessels that carry blood from the body to the heart.

Veins have valves which ensure that blood only flows in the correct direction. In patients with varicose veins these valves are incompetent or leaky.

Chronic high pressure in the veins from incompetent valves results in varicose veins and their complications.

They can be unsightly and affect confidence and quality of life

Pain and Swelling

Pain & Swelling

They can cause pain and swelling of the leg

Blood Clots

Blood Clots

Blood clots can form in them (superficial thrombophlebitis)

Skin Rashes

Skin Rashes

They can cause skin rashes (varicose eczema)

Leg Ulcers

Leg Ulcers

They can result in leg ulcers which can be difficult to heal

Investigations

Venous Assessment

The veins can be investigated with a non-invasive ultrasound test. Occasionally an invasive test such as a CT venogram or catheter venogram is required to investigate venous disease.

Venous Duplex Ultrasound

Venous Duplex Ultrasound

Non-invasive assessment of venous flow and valve function

CT Venogram

CT Venogram

Detailed imaging when complex venous disease suspected

Catheter Venogram

Catheter Venogram

Invasive gold standard for complex venous assessment

Treatment Options

Varicose veins can be treated by a number of means

Compression Stockings

Compression Stockings

Non-invasive treatment to improve venous flow and reduce symptoms. Available in different compression grades.

Surgery

Surgery

Surgical removal or ligation of problematic veins. Traditional approach for severe varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy

Injection of sclerosant agent to close off problematic veins. Minimally invasive outpatient procedure.

Radiofrequency/Laser Ablation

RF/Laser Ablation

Modern minimally invasive techniques using heat energy to close problematic veins from inside.

Individualized Treatment Planning

We will discuss the treatment options after review of your history, physical examination and investigations and decide together which treatment is best for you.
