Understanding Renal Vascular Disease
The kidney is a bean-shaped organ that lies within the abdomen. They serve many functions including filtering impurities from the blood to produce urine, regulation of plasma electrolytes and acid-base balance, regulation of blood pressure and production of some hormones.
The kidneys receive their blood supply usually by a single renal artery, that branches from the abdominal aorta.

Renal Arterial System
Causes of Renal Artery Stenosis
Stenoses of the arteries to the kidneys may be caused by the following
Atherosclerosis
Most common cause of renal artery stenosis
Fibromuscular Disease
Non-atherosclerotic arterial disease
Inflammatory Arteritis
Inflammatory conditions affecting arteries
Symptoms
Stenosis of the arteries to the kidneys may be asymptomatic, or may cause the following problems

Often Asymptomatic
Many cases of renal artery stenosis can be present without obvious symptoms, making regular health screenings important for early detection.

Symptomatic Presentations
Renovascular hypertension that may be difficult to control
Acute fluid buildup in the lungs
Progressive decline in kidney function
Investigations
Stenoses of the arteries to the kidneys can be identified and monitored with various imaging techniques

Duplex Ultrasound
Non-invasive first-line screening test

CT Angiography
Detailed cross-sectional imaging of renal vessels

MR Angiography
High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging

Catheter Angiography
Gold standard for detailed renal vessel assessment
Treatment Options
Individualized Treatment Planning
After review of your history, physical examination and investigations we will formulate an appropriate treatment plan for you. Stenoses of the renal arteries can be treated by a number of means.
Medical Management
Medications to control blood pressure and protect kidney function.
Endovascular Techniques
Minimally invasive procedures to open blocked renal arteries.
Surgical Options
Open surgical procedures for complex cases.

Renal Angioplasty & Stenting
Endovascular techniques such as angioplasty and stenting offer minimally invasive treatment options for renal artery stenosis.

Surgical Reconstruction
Surgery, such as bypass, may be required for complex lesions or failed endovascular treatment.
